Exotic. Colourful. Mouth-watering. There are probably dozens of words that could describe the fascinating diversity of Thai food. From mesmerizing fragrances to a firework of flavours, there are only a few places on earth offering such a diverse cuisine such as Thailand.

It is said that if you pay a visit to Thailand without actually trying its cuisine, you never really visited the “Land of Smiles” and would miss out on a huge chance to discover more about its culture. Let’s take a closer look at four special restaurants you shouldn’t miss out while visiting Bangkok:

Thip Samai Pad Thai

Pad Thai is widely regarded as one of Thailand’s national dishes; and one of the most famous places to eat this delicious dish in Bangkok is the Thip Samai Pad Thai - the restaurant opened its doors in 1966 and has gained an excellent reputation among locals and foreigners alike. Unlike most others restaurants, the Thip Samai Pad Thai uses charcoal fire to fry the vermicelli styled noodles. Tip: take a coconut juice along with your dish. A must try!

Where to find: 313 Thanon Mahachai, Phra Nakorn Open: 05:00pm-03:00am; Prices: Pad Thai- 70 Baht, Coconut Juice – 20 Baht.

Somtam Nua

Somtam Nua’s layout reminds more of a bistro, however the food served is still traditional Thai cuisine, or better, Isaan cuisine which can be mainly found around Thailand’s north-eastern region. Its signature dish, the papaya salad or ‘Som Tam’, comes in four different varieties while the main ingredients are generally the same: shredded unripe papaya, dried shrimps, tomato, limed and crunchy peanuts.

Where to find: 392/14 Soi Siam Square 5 Open: 11:00am-09:30pm Prices: from 59 Baht for a Som Tam

Yusup Pochana

What happens when you blend Thai and Arabic cuisine? You get finger licking dishes such as Khao Mok Peh (Biryani with goat) or Mataba Roti, a stuffed deep-fried pie! Located on the outskirts of Bangkok’s city centre it might take a bit to go there, but you won’t be disappointed. It serves some of the best Thai-Halal food in town and is definitely worth a visit, whether you eat Halal or just want to experience a whole new combination of incredible flavours. Tip: Goat meat is only served on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Where to find: 531/12 Kaset Nawamin Road, Lat Yao Open: 08:30am-03:00pm Prices: from 50 Baht

Tom Yum Kung

Located on Khao San Road, which is widely regarded as the mecca for backpackers, you can find a restaurant set in a traditional old style Thai house – Tom Yum Kung. Named after the popular soup made from spicy lemongrass and shrimps (which is also served here), it is considered as the best restaurant serving Thai food on Khao San. You can get not only a number of classic Thai dishes here, but also heavenly seafood dishes such as fried scallops and shrimps, seafood salad among others!

Where to find: 18 Khao San Road Open: 12:00pm-01:30am Prices: from 80 Baht
